Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups chicken broth (or beef broth for a darker gravy)
  • 1 chicken bouillon cube (or beef bouillon cube for a darker flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon soy sauce for added umami flavor

Directions

Step 1

Melt butter. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until it’s fully melted.

Step 2

Make the roux. Stir in the flour and cornstarch, whisking constantly to create a smooth paste. Cook for about 2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.

Step 3

Add broth. Slowly pour in the chicken broth (or beef broth), whisking as you go to prevent lumps from forming.

Step 4

Season the gravy. Add the bouillon cube, onion powder, garlic powder, and soy sauce (if using). Stir until the bouillon cube dissolves completely.

Step 5

Simmer. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 6

Adjust thickness. If the gravy is too thick, add a little more broth to thin it out. If it’s too thin, let it simmer a bit longer to thicken.

Step 7

Season to taste. Add salt and pepper to taste, and your gravy is ready to serve!

Recipe tips

If you want a darker, richer gravy, use beef broth instead of chicken broth and add a dash of soy sauce for extra depth. Whisk continuously while adding the broth to ensure the gravy stays lump-free. If you're cooking meat, adding pan drippings to the gravy will give it even more flavor. This gravy can be made ahead of time and reheated. If it thickens too much, just add a splash of broth when reheating.
