Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (90g) chocolate chips or chunks (optional for extra fudginess)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch (20x20 cm) square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until smooth and well combined.

Step 3

Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and whisk until the mixture becomes light and slightly fluffy.

Step 4

Sift the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder into the wet ingredients. Stir gently until everything is just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the brownies tough.

Step 5

Fold in the chocolate chips if using, for extra gooeyness in the center.

Step 6

Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are set and the center is slightly soft but not jiggly. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs.

Step 8

Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before slicing them into squares. Enjoy!

Recipe tips

Use high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate for the richest flavor. If you prefer extra fudgy brownies, slightly underbake them, and they’ll set as they cool. For added flavor, you can sprinkle sea salt on top before baking, or mix in chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans. To ensure even baking, use a light-colored metal pan. Dark pans tend to bake brownies faster on the edges.
