Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups beef or chicken broth (low-sodium for better control over saltiness)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional for a creamier texture)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the Roux. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for about 2-3 minutes until the roux turns a light golden color. This step helps prevent lumps in your gravy.

Step 2

Combine Ingredients in the Crockpot. Transfer the roux into the crockpot. Pour in the broth, then add the Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir everything to combine well.

Step 3

Slow Cook the Gravy. Set the crockpot to low and cook for 4 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Step 4

Finish and Season. After 4 hours, check the gravy for seasoning. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you prefer a creamier gravy, stir in the heavy cream at this stage.

Step 5

Thicken if Needed. If the gravy is thinner than you’d like, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water, then stir it into the crockpot and cook on high for another 15-20 minutes until it thickens.

Step 6

Serve. Pour the gravy into a serving dish, garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Recipe tips

For an extra savory boost, add a splash of soy sauce or a dash of beef bouillon powder. If you like a thicker gravy, feel free to add a bit more roux or use cornstarch to thicken it. If you prefer a lighter, creamy gravy, use half broth and half milk or add more heavy cream.
