Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1 small red onion, sliced
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Ketchup and mustard (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Shape the Patties. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions. Gently shape each portion into a patty about ¾ inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

Step 2

Cook the Patties. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (or preheat your grill). Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they’re nicely browned and cooked to your desired doneness.

Step 3

Add the Cheese. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Cover the skillet (or close the grill) to let the cheese melt.

Step 4

Toast the Buns. While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns in a separate pan or on the grill for about 1-2 minutes until golden.

Step 5

Assemble the Burger. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Layer the lettuce, tomato slices, onion rings, and pickles (if using). Place the cooked patty with melted cheese on top, and finish with the top half of the bun.

Step 6

Serve immediately with your favorite sides like fries, a salad, or onion rings.

Recipe tips

Don't overwork the beef when shaping the patties; the less you handle the meat, the juicier the burger will be. Brioche buns add a slight sweetness and extra softness to your burger. For medium doneness, cook the patty until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C). For a gourmet touch, spread a bit of garlic butter on the buns before toasting, or add caramelized onions.
